How To: Clean Your Make Up Brushes

how to clean your make up brushes
Hello everyone!
Today we are talking about how to deep clean your make up brushes. Cleaning your brushes can be very tedious and just plain annoying. I personally am very lazy and will use as many brushes as I can until I run out of clean ones! It is an extremely bad habit of mine. Reason being is your make up brushes get dirty quite quickly from excess make up that builds up, bacteria, oils, and gross enough - dead skin cells. It is gross to think about, but it is important to keep your make up brushes nice and clean.

I believe that it is not the most realistic thing to be deep cleaning your make up brushes every single day, so typically I deep clean all my brushes once a week. If this isn't enough I will go in throughout the week and spot clean them using my Sonia Kashuk Brush and Sponge Cleanser.

There are many methods and products you can use to deep clean your brushes. When I deep clean mine I use baby shampoo. I find it not only the most cost effective, but the easiest way to clean my brushes. The shampoo deep cleans them while keeping the bristles nice and soft.

What you're going to need:
Towels
(Depending on how many brushes you have - I use one mid size towel)
Small bowl
Baby shampoo
All your dirty make up brushes

how to clean your make up brushes using shampoo

Step 1: Pour a small amount of baby shampoo into a small bowl.

Step 2: Take your make up brush and rinse it under warm water facing downwards until all the bristles are wet. Side note: the water does not have to be burning hot. To kill bacteria water only has to be at 40 degrees.

Step 3: Dip your brush into the bowl of shampoo and start making circular motions against your hand. You can also use a paper plate or a sponge if you wish.

Step 4: Rinse your brush under warm water and use your fingers to gently rub the shampoo out from the bristles. Gently squeeze the water out of the brush when you feel the brush is nice and clean and rid of all the shampoo.

Step 5: Roll the end of your towel on one side and lay your brush down on it. This will ensure all the water gets out from the handle as well as the brush bristles. If water is kept inside the handle it can cause rusting for metal handles, which will lead to your bristles falling out or cause the glue on the inside of the handle to release and cause your brush handle to fall off. Both two things we want to avoid!

Step 6: Repeat steps 1-5 until all your brushes are nice and squeaky clean!

You're done and now your make up brushes are nice and clean and ready to apply your make up flawlessly!

Photoshop 101: How To Brighten an Image

Adobe photoshop how to brighten an image - Amanda Speroni

Hello everyone! Today's post is a little different, I have a couple of requests from some blogging friends to create some photoshop how to's. I am by no means a technology expert, but through my studies I have been fortunate enough to learn about this program.

This tutorial is a basic step by step guide on how to take a photo that is dark and brighten it up to your likings. There are other ways of doing this, but this is the easiest and more quick technique that I have come across. That being said, let's get started!

Step 1: Open up your image in photoshop. Simple enough.

Adobe photoshop guide step 1

Step 2: We're going to apply something that is called an adjustment layer to the image. Under the 'Layer' drop down we are going to select 'New Adjustment Layer' and select the 'Levels' version. Once you click this a little dialogue box will pop up.

Adobe photoshop guide new levels layer step two

Step 3: This is your layer dialogue box. It pops up every time you decide to create a new layer, whether its a regular layer or an adjustment layer. You can rename this layer if you'd like, but I am just going to keep the generic 'Levels 1' name. Click OK

Adobe photoshop guide new levels layer press okay step three

Step 4: On your layers panel you will see this adjustment layer pop up. This is a good thing. Now be sure that it is the layer you have selected. When it is selected it will be blue tinted like seen in the picture.

Adobe photoshop guide select levels layer step four

Step 5: Alright let's get to brightening this image up. We are going to go under the layer styles drop menu. Your layer will always begin being set as 'Normal' we are going to set it at 'Screen'.  Over on the properties panel you can keep all the settings at their default settings.

Adobe photoshop guide layer options screen step five

Step 6: This is what is going to lighten up the image. Now you may like the way the image looks right off the bat. Or you may find it too bright. Based on your preference you can change the Opacity of this layer option. I will set mine at 80%. This is also a beneficial feature to ensure all your images for a post are the same brightness.

Final product: Here is what you should get as a finished product.

I hope this step by step guide helped some of you learn a new thing on photoshop! I know it can be an overwhelming program, my best advice is to take your time, practice and try new things! You can always click undo ;) I will be posting similar content to this one, if you have any requests for step by step guides for photoshop leave them in the comments or tweet me @AmandaSperoni.

IPSY: August Glam Bag

August Ipsy glam bag products and review

I finally did it. After months of checking out different subscriptions boxes that are on the market for beauty addicts like myself, I finally decided to try one out. I decided to venture with the Ipsy subscription box for a couple of different reasons.

1. It is very affordable. The Ipsy glam bag is $10 monthly, and you typically get five products inside.

2. They have a wide variety of products. On Ipsy's website you can see all the brands that they work with and are put into the subscription boxes per month. The variety of products was mind blowing. Ipsy's website also has a quiz that you take when signing up, therefore they know what types of products suit you as well as what you are particularly interested in.

3. I am a huge fan of their stylists and trust their judgement. I follow all their stylists on YouTube as well as their social media pages so I have seen them talk about the Ipsy subscription service and the products that have been inside the glam bags before.

After finally signing up in mid-July, I have received my first Ipsy order.

Each month the subscription box items are held inside a "glam bag" and have a unique theme. To me, I can never have enough makeup bags, so this alone is a great addition to the subscription box. This month's theme was "Prep School" and came with a houndstooth pattern bag with pink details. Very chic if you ask me.

Inside the bag comes with five different products. Some are sample sizes and some are full size products. There are several different bags you can get, which depends on your quiz results.

Here is what's inside my August Ipsy Glam Bag:

1. Marc Anthony - Nourishing argan oil of Morocco oil treatment
Ipsy Nourishing Argan Oil of Morocco by Marc Anthony

I'm really excited to try this product out. Its a morocco argan oil for your hair. I have extremely dry ends so I am hoping this will help them out. As of right now, all I say about this product is that I love the packaging. Very easy to get the product out of the tube and still have full control of how much comes out. I also love the smell of the oil.

2. Clear Start by Dermalogica - Oil clearing matte moisturizer with SPF 15

This product intrigues me. I am always nervous to try out new moisturizers because I have used the same one for years! But this one states that it is oil clearing and will help have a matte finish. Two things that I enjoy!

3. 'Pencil Me In' Cosmetics - Natural eyeliner in Boysenberry
Pencil me in cosmetics eye liner in Boysenberry Ipsy bag

First I want to talk about the packaging. I love it. It comes with a built in sharpener inside the cap of the eyeliner. How neat is that? I have never seen packaging like this before for a pencil eye liner. I was also pleasantly surprised with the colour payoff of the eyeliner. Its a stunning deep blue. Swatches below.

4. Hikari Cosmetics - Lip Gloss

Hikari cosmetics lip gloss from ipsy august bag

Gorgeous. I cannot say enough good things about this gloss. Its a beautiful deep berry shade, which is absolutely perfect for fall just around the corner. I cannot wait to wear this shade. It has a shiny finish but does not seem to be sticky whatsoever.

5. Trust Fund Beauty - Nail Polish in Elegantly Wasted

Trust fund beauty nail polish from ipsy august bag

Really liking this nail polish shade. Its a shade that is versatile in my opinion. As it is a deeper lilac purple you can wear it while transitioning into fall. I love the shade and can't wait to paint my nails this colour next week!

Overall I am extremely pleased with my first Ipsy Glam Bag. I can't wait to further try out these products. I do think that you get really great products or the price of the subscription service, which is 10$ US.

Let me know which subscription services you have and which one is your favourite! Thank you for reading!

Anastasia Beverly Hills: Shadow Couture Palette - Review & Swatches

Anastasia Beverly Hills Shadow Couture Palette Review and Swatches Amanda Speroni

Every season or so, Anastasia Beverly Hills comes out with a new eyeshadow palette with 10 different shades inside. The anticipation builds as they advertise the palette before their launch date, and reviews start popping up. Each time I managed to tell myself I do not need another eyeshadow palette. But this time was different. When I first saw the Shadow Couture palette on their Instagram, my mouth instantly dropped. The 10 shadows are stunning. All 10 shadows are unique and have their own statement to them, but at the same time go so well together. The versatility of the shadows means that you can create endless amounts of looks with using this palette alone. It is safe to say after having this palette for just two weeks, Anastasia Beverly Hills knows how to do a good eyeshadow palette.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Shadow Couture Palette packaging

To start, let’s talk about the packaging. It is sleek enough that you can bring it with you on the go, or travelling, but not small to the point where you don’t get a decent size eyeshadow pan. It also comes with a very good size mirror, which for me, is a must have for a good palette. Another thing that draws my attention to palettes is when they have the names of the shadows beside the pan. Some palettes neglect this concept, which I personally believe is a minor downfall.

Anastasia Beverly Hills shadow couture palette packaging and shades

Now, lets get to the good stuff. Like I previously mentioned, there are 10 shadows in the palette that are all stunning and versatile. You have amazing options for the crease and highlight. But you are also given some more bold colours to help intensify any look. While they kept the palette neutral friendly they also provided more adventurous shades as well. This means you can use this palette for everyday purposes, or branch out and have a more creative and colourful look.

The consistency of these shadows are amazing, absolutely no complaints. The matte shadows are very creamy and blend very well. The colour pay off is very good for all the shadows in the palette, matte and shimmery. The shimmery shadows also have very good colour payoff and to my surprise not very much fall out. They look stunning alone, but when mixed with fix plus look incredible. The fix plus adds a little more sheen/metallic look to them, which I love to intensify looks.

Overall I believe this palette is excellent. I have always been a fan of Anastasia Beverly Hills brow products, and now it is safe to say I love their eyeshadows as well. Next up… their infamous lip products!

Thank you all for reading, let me know in the comments your thoughts on this palette, whether you own it or if it is on your wish list! Also be sure to subscribe to my youtube channel, I will have my first makeup look using this palette up on Friday!

My First Ever Monthly Favourites: July 2015

July Favourites - Amanda Speroni
Well this is exciting, my first monthly favourites! I felt as if I didn't have enough products this month to do a full YouTube video on it, but I wanted to share a couple products on my blog. During the summer months I tend to wear a lot less make up throughout the week. The only time I'll put on foundation and do an eye look is when I'm going out in the evening or on the weekend, or when I'm filming for my channel. Therefore my July favourites include products that I go to on a daily basis for my everyday quick routine. Let's just jump in before I start rambling.

1) The Maybelline BB Cream is what I have been using on a daily basis to help even out my skin tone.

I have oily skin and this stuff stays on all day long and doesn't make me look like an oily hot mess. As you know BB creams do multiple things for your skin, but this one I feel what stands out is that it does give you a bit of coverage, it moisturizes quite well without leaving a greasy residue and it also has SPF in it, which is perfect for everyday makeup in the summer months.

Mac Studio Fix Powder, Smash Box powder and Maybelline BB cream

With this product I do like to set it with a more full coverage powder. This leads me to two different products.

2) The Smashbox Halo Effect Loose Powder is amazing for setting this BB cream. It leaves my skin looking very healthy and flawless. It goes on the skin so evenly and doesn't cling to any dry patches. With this product on top of the BB cream I typically only have to touch up once at around lunch time, and then I'm good to go again.

Smashbox halo effect loose powder

3) Mac's Powder Foundation is what I go to if I have a blemish or red spot on my face. You can use this product on its own and will still give you a nice full coverage look, but lately I have also been using this product on top of my BB cream and it looks amazing. It really does last all day, I rarely have to touch up unless I have been outside for a long period of time. Its beautiful and I highly recommend & as you can see from the picture below, it has been put to very good use!

Mac cosmetics Studio Fix pressed powder foundation

Wearing minimal makeup can sometimes get boring, especially if you are a makeup enthusiast who loves to be creative. But when you're in a rush sometimes that's not an option. To help looks become more creative and add more of a pop I have been reaching for so many lipsticks. Here are my top three this month.

Mac Velvet Teddy, Nyx Matte lipstick in Sierra and Too Faced Cosmetics lipstick in believe

4) NYX Matte Lipstick in 'Sierra' This is my first lipstick from this line and I love it. The consistency is very similar to Mac matte lipsticks. Very creamy and not overly drying for your lips. I can wear this lipstick without a lip liner and not have any issues as well. The shade is the perfect pinky-nude for everyday wear.

5) Speaking of matte lipsticks the next one is Mac's Lipstick 'Velvet Teddy'. This shade has been so popular this past year. It has a Kylie Jenner effect to it. Its absolutely stunning, you can wear it any time of year, and I think this is a shade that everyone should have in their collection.

6) The last lipstick is more of a summer time shade. Its the Too Faced La Creme Lipstick in 'Believe'.  This one has more of a glossy finish to it, which I do love for summer time. Its a bright vibrant pink but not too over the top, making it completely wearable for everyday.

Swatches of Mac, NYX, and Too Face lipsticks

I could probably list another 10 lipsticks that I've been loving, but we'll stop here for now. Also, is it just me, or do you guys love the names of lipsticks, can they get any more creative and cute?

7) The last product I want to mention is a make up brush. Its the Real Techniques Sculpting Brush. I adore this brush, I use this brush everyday for blending out my concealer under my eyes. The shape of the brush fits perfectly in the inner corner and it blends like a dream! It makes applying concealer so easy and quick! I absolutely love this brush.

That is it for my first monthly favourites! Thank you all for taking the time to stop by my blog and reading! I hope you enjoyed this and find some of these products to your likings as well! Let me know in the comments what some of your favourites were!

I'm also very pleased and excited about my blog make over. I have been looking and hunting for a blog template that I liked and was easy for my to set up on my blog as I am not good with HTML codes and such. I was recommended to look over on Etsy, and I found so many beautiful templates that came with easy to follow instructions. Setting it up was a breeze, and I love the way it turned out. If you are currently looking to revamp your blog I highly recommend heading to Etsy. This template itself is from Shiny Magic. She has many beautiful templates for blogs, and I highly recommend.
I'm hoping to be able to get on a better schedule for my YouTube channel, as well as for my blog. Fingers crossed!
Thank you for watching & for reading. Have a great day.
